Program Themes for October 2011

Below is a sampling of some activities your child may participate in during the month of October 2011.

 

Infants

 For Infants, the theme is “All Around Me.” Sample activities include:

  • Library & Language: Listening to songs and fingerplays; Looking at photo cards
  • Motor: Clapping hands; Filling and dumping soft blocks
  • Cognitive: Participating in interactive games with adults; Exploring rattles of different sizes and sounds
  • Sensory: Exploring the textures and sounds of paper

 

Toddlers

For Toddlers, the theme is “Where I Live.”  Sample activities include:

  • Library & Language: Saying rhymes; Listening to stories told using magnets; Reading My Friends and Time to Wake Up! 
  • Creative Arts: Creating houses and buildings with paper shapes
  • Sensory: Exploring leaves, twigs, and pinecones
  • Dramatic Play: Role-playing family members with home-related props

 

Discovery Preschool

For Discovery Preschool, the theme is “Where I Live.” Sample activities include:

  • Library & Language Arts: Exploring community-related books, photo cards, and photos; Using finger puppets and flannel pieces to take on roles of people in the community; Featured books: Be My Neighbor by Maya Ajmera and John D. Ivanko and Autumn by Gerda Muller
  • Creative Arts: Decorating grocery bags; Making foil badges
  • Science & Sensory: Exploring leaves, pinecones, and twigs with hands, rakes, and shovels; Identifying sounds
  • Dramatic Play: Pretending to be postal workers, mail carriers, and customers in a post office
  • Math & Manipulatives: Sorting small, medium, and large objects; Working with nesting cups

 

Preschool

For Preschool, the theme is “Pets.”  Sample activities include:

  • Library and Language Arts: Writing stories
  • ; Exploring photo cards; Reading the Featured Book Pet Show by Ezra Jack Keats
  • Creative Arts: Painting rocks to create pet rocks
  • Science & Sensory: Exploring bird feed and dog treats
  • Dramatic Play: Pretending and role-playing in a pet shop
  • Math & Manipulatives: Working with lacing cards

 

Prekindergarten

For Prekindergarten, the theme is “In the Fall.”  Sample activities include:

  • Library & Literacy: Manipulating and solving puzzles made from product labels; Featured Book: I Know It’s Autumn by Eileen Spinelli
  • Creative Arts: Creating two-dimensional collages with fall-related objects on paper; Creating three-dimensional collages with play dough and fall-related objects
  • Science & Sensory: Exploring magnetic properties of objects; Exploring cracked corn and corn on the cob
  • Dramatic Play: Role-playing and pretending in an apple orchard and pumpkin patch
