Program Themes for January 2011

Below is a sampling of activities that your child may experience this month.



For infants, the theme is "Winter Tunnels".  Sample activities include:

  • Library & Literacy: Exploring the featured Books: How Much Is That Doggie in the Window? by Iza Trapani; The Itsy Bitsy Spider by Iza Trapani; Listening to vocabulary words that describe emotions, colors, and foods
  • Sensory: Winter tunnel exploration
  • Motor: Bouncing balls; chasing cars
  • Cognitive: Exploring cars; Investigating shapes



For Toddlers, the theme is "In My Imagination".  Sample activities include:

  • Library & Literacy : Exploring nursery-rhyme magnets, winter books, and nursery-rhyme or fairy-tale books; Featured Books: Five Little Ducks by Child's Play, This Old Man by Child's Play
  • Creative Arts: Creating fingerpaint prints
  • Sensory: Water exploration with tools to scoop and pour
  • Dramatic Play: Using dress-up clothes and props to pretend to be on "the stage"


Discovery Preschool

For Discovery Preschool, the theme is "Things That Go". Sample activities include:

  • Library & Literacy : Looking at transportation-related photo cards and books; Writing letters and postcards; Featured Books: Freight Train by Donald Crews, My Car by Byron Barton, and Things That Go by Dorling Kindersley Publishing
  • Creative Arts: Creating collages and painting with puffy paint
  • Science & Sensory: Experimenting with building ramps and rolling cars and balls down the ramps
  • Dramatic Play: Dressing up and pretending to ride on a train
  • Math & Manipulatives: Exploring shapes with shape puzzle cards and wooden puzzles

Preschool & Prekindergarten

For Preschool and Prekindergarten, the monthly themes are "Dinosaurs" and "In the Winter":

Sample activities for "Dinosaurs" include:

  • Library & Literacy: Exploring photo cards about dinosaurs; Creating a book of opposites; Featured Book: Dinosaurs Roar! by Paul and Henrietta Stickland
  • Creative Arts: Painting at the easel; Creating with play dough and dinosaur-shaped cookie cutters and play-dough tools
  • Science & Sensory: Exploring cornstarch "tar"; Searching for dinosaurs in plastic eggs
  • Dramatic Play: Pretending and using imagination in a prehistoric cave

Sample activities for "In the Winter" include:

  • Library & Literacy: Writing with chalk and crayons; Exploring photo cards and books about winter; Featured Book: The Mitten by Jan Brett
  • Creative Arts: Painting with colored ice cubes; Creating frosted paintings at the easel
  • Science & Sensory: Making birdfeeders; Exploring whipped snow
  • Math & Manipulatives: Calculating the melting rates of ice cubes; Building animal dwellings
