Program Themes for February 2012

Below is a sampling of some activities your child may participate in during the month of February 2012.

 

Infants

For infants, the theme is “What’s that Smell?” Sample activities include:

  • Library & Language: Listening to pictures books read aloud, such as I'm a Little Teapot and It's Raining, It's Pouring by Iza Trapani; listening to words that describe vehicles and motion
  • Sensory: Exploring a variety of scents
  • Motor: Exploring a variety of rattles; practicing sitting up and pulling up to stand
  • Cognitive: Exploring pictures of vehicles; looking at self in a mirror

 

Toddlers

For Toddlers, the theme is “Food.” Sample activities include:

  • Library & Language: Exploring books and photos of food items and mealtime routines; Listening to picture books read aloud, such as Over in the Meadow and Ten Little Monkeys by Child’s Play
  • Creative Arts: Creating art with puff paint in squeeze bottles on cardboard and colorful paper
  • Science & Sensory: Exploring and manipulating scented play dough
  • Dramatic Play: Role-playing mealtimes with food and restaurant props

 

Discovery Preschool

For Discovery Preschool, the theme is “In My Imagination.” Sample activities include:

  • Library & Language Arts: Decorating and writing in booklets; Reading the featured books: Green as a Bean by Karla Kuskin and Winter by Gerda Muller
  • Creative Arts: Exploring the effects of chalk and water on various colors of paper
  • Science & Sensory: Exploring ice cubes and cotton balls
  • Dramatic Play: Pretending to be characters on stage
  • Math & Manipulatives: Exploring number concepts through matching and sorting

 

Preschool

For Preschool, the theme is “Transportation.”  Sample activities include:

  • Library & Language Arts: Creating travel booklets; exploring photographs and books featuring different modes of transportation; Reading the featured book: The Big Trip by Valeri Gorbachev
  • Creative Arts: Painting on paper of different shapes
  • Science & Sensory: Washing and scrubbing vehicles
  • Dramatic Play: Making a trip on an airplane
  • Math & Manipulatives: Sorting vehicle counters by color, size, and type of vehicle; building airports, train stations, and other types of transportation locations

 

Prekindergarten

For Prekindergarten, the theme is “Transportation.”  Sample activities include:

  • Library & Literacy: Creating and writing in postcards; exploring photo cards and books about transportation; playing phonics games; Reading the featured book: The Big Trip by Valeri Gorbachev
  • Creative Arts: Painting with marbles; creating tire-track paintings at the easel
  • Science & Sensory: Exploring cause-and-effect relationships between wheels and inclined planes; exploring water and Styrofoam boats
  • Math & Manipulatives: Using two-dimensional wooden shapes to build vehicles; building with blocks
