Program Themes for September 2011

Below is a sampling of some activities your child may participate in during the month of September 2011.

 

Infants

For infants, the theme is “All Around Me.” Sample activities include:

  • Library & Language: Participating in interactive conversations and games with adults using books, puppets, and toys
  • Motor: Engaging in various kinds of movement in an activity gym; Practicing throwing balls
  • Cognitive: Engaging in coordinated hand movements with pie pans; Dropping objects into a bucket
  • Sensory: Exploring colors with suncatchers

 

Toddlers

For Toddlers, the theme is “Me and My Family.”  Sample activities include:

  • Library & Language: Exploring books in the classroom library; Exploring the letters of the alphabet; Discussing picture cards
    Creative Arts: Coloring boxes with markers and crayons
  • Sensory: Dancing with scarves; Exploring sounds made by shakers filled with different materials
  • Motor: Passing a beach ball; Following directions in a song or rhyme

 

Discovery Preschool

For Discovery Preschool, the theme is “Me and My Family.” Sample activities include:

  • Library & Language Arts: Exploring family-related books, photo cards, and photos; Using words to describe the textures on tactile cards; Featured books: Hands Can by Cheryl Willis Hudson and You and Me Together: Moms, Dads, and Kids Around the World by Barbara Kerley
  • Creative Arts: Creating art with markers and crayons
  • Science & Sensory: Exploring a variety of smells with smelling containers; Learning proper hand-washing techniques
  • Dramatic Play: Dressing up and pretending in a home-themed dramatic play set up
  • Math & Manipulatives: Clapping patterns; Sorting objects by color and shape

 

Preschool

For Preschool, the theme is “My Home and Family.”  Sample activities include:

  • Library and Language Arts: Writing letters to families and friends and mailing the letters in a mailbox; Discussing pictures of children and their families; Featured Book: Families by Ann Morris
  • Creative Arts: Painting houses at the easel
  • Science & Sensory: Bathing dolls and washing dishes
  • Dramatic Play: Using dress-up clothes and home- and kitchen-related objects
  • Math & Manipulatives: Building with blocks made from milk cartons and stuffed grocery bags; Creating graphs about homes and families

 

Prekindergarten

For Preschool, the theme is “Pets.”  Sample activities include:

  • Library and Language Arts: Creating pet tags; Discussing books and photo cards of pets; Featured Book: Pet Show! by Ezra Jack Keats
  • Creative Arts: Creating pet sculptures with salt-dough
  • Science & Sensory: Blowing on lightweight items to see how far they will move; Exploring the textures of feathers and birdseed
  • Dramatic Play: Pretending in a pet shop
