Program Themes for February 2013

Below is a sampling of activities that your child may experience this month.

 

Infants

For infants, the theme is “What’s that Smell?” Sample activities include:

  • Library & Literacy: Exploring the featured Books: I'm a Little Teapot and It's Raining, It's Pouring by Iza Trapani; Listening to words that describe vehicles and motion
  • Sensory: Exploring a variety of scents
  • Motor: Coloring with crayons; Manipulating objects in and out of a container
  • Cognitive: Sorting objects; Searching for objects

 

Toddlers

For Toddlers, the theme is “Food.” Sample activities include:

  • Library & Literacy : Exploring books and photos of food items and mealtime routines; Featured Books: Over in the Meadow and Five Little Ducks by Child’s Play
  • Creative Arts: Creating art with puffy paint in squeeze bottles on cardboard and colored paper
  • Sensory: Manipulating scented play dough
  • Dramatic Play: Role-playing mealtimes with food and restaurant props

Discovery Preschool

For Discovery Preschool, the theme is “In My Imagination.” Sample activities include:

  • Library & Literacy : Decorating and writing in booklets; Featured Books: Green as a Bean by Karla Kuskin and Winter by Gerda Muller
  • Creative Arts: Exploring the effects of chalk and water on various colors of paper
  • Science & Sensory: Exploring ice cubes and cotton balls
  • Dramatic Play: Acting out different characters on stage
  • Math & Manipulatives: Exploring number concepts through matching and sorting

Preschool & Prekindergarten

For Preschool and Prekindergarten, the monthly theme is “Tools and Machines.”  Sample activities include:

  • Library & Literacy: Writing on graph paper; Photographs and books featuring tools and machines; Featured Book: Alphabet Under Construction by Denise Fleming
  • Creative Arts: Painting on paper with plastic tools and trucks
  • Science & Sensory: Woodworking with tools; Building structures in water with piping, connectors, and tubing
  • Dramatic Play: Role-playing with props in a hardware store and repair shop
  • Math & Manipulatives: Counting and hammering golf tees into Styrofoam

 

For Prekindergarten, Sample activities include:

  • Library & Literacy: Creating construction signs and writing sign words; Featured Book: Alphabet Under Construction by Denise Fleming
  • Creative Arts: Making wood sculptures; Creating still-life drawings of appliances and tools
  • Science and Sensory: Making paper from pulp; Woodworking with tools
