Program Themes for August 2012

Below is a sampling of activities that your child may experience this month.

 

Infants

 Sample activities include:

  • Library & Language: Participating in interactive conversations and games with adults using books, puppets, and toys
  • Motor: Shaking rattles; listening to books read aloud during “tummy time”; walking with support on different textures
  • Cognitive: Exploring objects, colors, and sounds of “beach bottles”
  • Sensory: Exploring play dough

 

Toddlers

For Toddlers, the theme is “Emotions.”  Sample activities include:

  • Library & Language: Exploring books about people expressing emotions, including The Way I Feel and Clap Your Hands; discussing people-related magnets and photo cards  
  • Creative Arts: Creating fingerprint pictures by using ink pads to make marks on paper
  • Sensory: Dancing on sticky contact paper to explore the sticky texture with feet
  • Dramatic Play: Pretending to go on a picnic using items such as picnic baskets and plastic food and dishes

 

Discovery Preschool

For Discovery Preschool, the theme is “Sand.” Sample activities include:

  • Library & Language Arts: Exploring sand-related books and photo cards; using words to describe the textures on tactile cards; Reading the featured books Summer by Gerda Muller and Sea, Sand, Me! by Patricia Hubbell
  • Creative Arts: Creating art with sand in a variety of ways such as by tracing with crayons over sand shapes and painting with paint-sand mixtures using paintbrushes, spoons, and craft sticks
  • Science & Sensory: Exploring the textures and properties of dry and wet sand
  • Dramatic Play: Pretending to be at the beach
  • Math & Manipulatives: Matching math cards, photo cards, and finger puppets

 

Preschool

Preschool classrooms will follow Summer Camp curriculum. The weekly themes being explored during this month are Animal Academy and Get a Move On. Sample activities include:

  • Library and Language Arts: Writing animal names; Creating sports pennants; Reading theme-related books
  • Creative Arts: Making animal masks; Making athletic-shoe prints
  • Science & Sensory: Examining the properties of feathers, fur, shells, leaves, and rocks with magnifying glasses; Comparing the characteristics of a variety of sports balls
  • Dramatic Play: Pretending to go on a safari; Pretending to be athletes playing a variety of sports
  • Math and Manipulatives: Sorting animals; Sorting sports balls according to their properties

 

Prekindergarten
