Kathaleen DeBarr, Center Director
Many of our child care centers are accredited by national organizations that require us to meet rigorous early childhood education standards and guidelines for high-quality care and education. Programs that are accredited have demonstrated their commitment to go beyond the state’s minimum licensing requirements to meet and maintain these high standards of quality.
Babies grow and learn every day. Our goal is to provide a safe and nurturing "home away from home" where babies can explore and make new discoveries. We know that learning through play is extremely valuable at this age and our Early Foundations® Infant program is designed to give babies the skills that will serve as the building blocks for a lifetime of learning.
As toddlers develop friendships, self-esteem, and curiosity, our Early Foundations® Toddler program will help them explore their world in a safe and nurturing environment. Our unique curriculum is based on the philosophy that children learn best through experiences. So each day is filled with fun activities that excite and develop toddlers, giving them the comfort and confidence to speak those first few important words, as well as make their first friends.
At this age, children are making new discoveries daily. And as two-year olds begin to exert their independence, our Early Foundations® Discovery Preschool program is prepared to open their eyes to a world of learning, sharing, and exploring. Our holistic approach in the classroom engages young minds with a blend of music, art, and movement, as well as the early education fundamentals they'll need as they continue on to preschool.
As preschoolers gain more self-esteem, they may feel ready to take on the world. Our Early Foundations® Preschool program enhances that confidence by providing activities to help children become problem solvers and lifelong learners. Through independent exploration, structured activities, and hands-on learning, children will work on early literacy, math, science, and social studies concepts. A healthy dose of running, jumping, and dancing keeps them active too.
Prekindergartners are preparing for the adventure of a lifetime – school. And our Early Foundations Prekindergarten® program is designed to get them ready by teaching letters and words, math concepts, and valuable social skills. With small group instruction, independent play in an organized atmosphere, and whole-group activities, children will have all the right skills to hop, skip, and jump right into kindergarten.
As children reach school age, our comprehensive full-day kindergarten program helps them explore, communicate, and create – all in a nurturing, small-class setting. Our team of expert educators has created a unique curriculum of reading, language, arts, math, science, and physical fitness that’s presented in a fun way to encourage a lifelong love of learning. Plus, our program is aligned with local and state elementary school standards, so children will be prepared to confidently enter first grade.
Don’t miss out on KinderCare’s Summer of Wonder: Six themed programs that will make summer exciting, educational and tons of fun. Whether your child is in our preschool, Pre-K or school-age programs, all of it is designed to help children learn while soaking up the fun. We offer flexible scheduling options to meet the needs of busy families like yours so we hope to see you there.
The Cooking Adventures program gives children opportunities to participate in fun, developmentally appropriate cooking experiences. They will learn about recipes, ingredients, cooking vocabulary, and the importance of a healthy diet. The curriculum includes lessons on picnics, pizza, and heart-healthy meals.
The Math Adventures enrichment program is designed to teach important mathematics concepts such as geometry, numbers, measurement, and probability. Your child will learn about length, height, and weight. He will learn about shapes and solids. He will learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and count money. Math is everywhere and giving your child every advantage now will add up to success later in life.
Ongoing research proves that early exposure to music helps children think, reason, create, and express themselves. Children will laugh and learn about rhythm, vocal melodies, and a variety of musical genres and instruments, which can lower stress and advance memory. Learning never sounded so good.
Set your child up for advanced success with literacy through phonics, the study of letters and sounds. Reader books, games, and activity cards help your child understand the basics of vowels and blending syllables, giving him confidence and command of language.
Spanish Adventures provides young learners with a foundation for later success with the Spanish language. Music, games, children's Spanish literature, and other tools give children multiple opportunities to hear, practice, and see Spanish language for vocabulary and conversational development. Curriculum includes lessons on greetings, numbers, colors, animals, family, body parts and pets as well as how to get engage conversationally during common scenarios at home, a restaurant, or at the zoo. Teaching is more than a job for our staff members at Totem Lake KinderCare. Our passionate teachers work closely with our parents and each other to create an atmosphere dedicated to learning. They are strive at providing a stimulating education for their students while providing support through early childhood milestones.
In order to continue providing up-to-date techniques in early childhood education, our teachers attend educator trainings throughout the year locally. Additionally, our corporate offices host trainings on a bi-annual basis. We believe the success of our students begins by investing in our teachers' success!
What I love most about my job is spending my whole day with the children. They are like little sponges absorbing everything in their learning environment. The excitement that exudes from them when "they get it" is the best feeling to have as and educator.

I am the Center Director at our Accredited Totem Lake center. I have worked here for a total of six years of my twenty seven years in the field of Early Childhood Education. My degree is in Early Childhood Education. I chose to work in this career because of my love for children. I love being a part of their early years and it is not everyday that you can say you go to work to "play." It is also rewarding to work with the families and employees daily being partners in the growth and development of the children.
Walking with children has given me the opportunity to be creative in so many ways. I love showing students the tricks to accomplishing a goal and then see their faces light up when they master a new skill.
Sarrie has always enjoyed tuturing and mentoring younger children while growing up. From teaching her neighbors how to ride a bike to volunteering at the elementary school she attended, Sarrie found ways to reach out in her community while working with children. This enthusiasm is always apparent since she joined KinderCare in 2009. Initially, Sarrie was hired to teach in the Toddler/Two's program at the Redmond KinderCare in 2009. Within three months of starting, she was put in charge of restarting the Music Adventures Program while getting students more involved in all Learning Adventures the center offered. At that same time, she worked towards her personal educational goal of obtaining her CDA certification. In the summer of 2011, she was promoted to the Program Supervisor position at the Rose Hill KinderCare where she became a universal team player by taking over bus runs, leading staff trainings, and planning events, like Parent's Night Out, the Fall Festival, and the Winter Gala. Due to having extensive leadership experience from these roles, she became our Assistant Director in 2012. As our Assistant Director, she is amazed to see how involved the parents of the Totem Lake KinderCare were and how passionate the teachers were for their center. As a result of seeing such passion, Sarrie is an advocate and proud member of the Totem Lake KinderCare family! She comes to work everyday looking forward to helping shape the lives of the young students at Totem Lake.

It is an amazing feeling to be apart of an infants life from the time they are six weeks old through one year. Each milestone during this time in their life is so different from the next one from trying to hold their head up, to rolling over, to sitting up, to moving across the floor. From their face expressions to their way of communicating to the world.
Ms. Patty has worked with children for over eight years and is committed to their development and growth. She is a committed passionate teacher and mother who enjoys helping children reach each milestone in their life.

Ms. Julie is always on the go! She loves traveling and sharing her stories with her students. She is constantly coming up with new ways to engage her students in learning and integrating new technology into the classroom's curriculum. Additionally, she works with her students to concentrate on working together when accomplishing classroom goals.

Ms. Sayra is following her own dream by taking undergraduate courses while inspiring her students how to follow their dreams. She enjoys reading to her students and coming up with art projects for her students to have fun while learning. She helps them understand and express their feelings to create a warm classroom atmosphere.
What I like the most about Early Education is the different experiences I get to have with my students.
Ms. Humaira comes to the TotemLake KinderCare with caregiver experience. Her dedication to move around the center has gained her the experience in working with the school age children. Ms. Humaira's calm, nurturing and hands-on personality makes a great fit with working with the children. She provides a fair and consistent learning environment for the children; a place for them to have fun, make friends and work on their homework and planned activities.
Our center is an open-concept center. With exception to our Infants and Toddler programs, each of our preschool classrooms are divided by half-walls to allow our children to be able to interact with the other children and teachers beside them. This allows transitioning from one room to the next much easier for the children.
Our building was built in the 1980's. We are located right around the corner of Slater Ave NE off of 124th Ave NE.
